Surfrider Ocean Friendly Commitment

Pollution Mitigation

We are proud to be one of the FOUR restaurants in Humboldt County that are certified Ocean Friendly by the Surfrider Nonprofit organization. We are joined by Six Rivers Brewery, Cafe Brio & Humboldt Bay Social Club in our commitment to protecting the ocean. Gyppo has not only committed to the list of items below but has also installed a pollution mitigation system in the form of a bioswale.

Have you noticed that giant empty pond at the southwest corner of the property. No, it’s not a swimming pool in the making it is a sophisticated bioswale! All the water from our parking lot and roof drain into this "pond" which is made up of layers of gravel, bark chips and compost. It catches the water to remove any pollutants and then slowly releases it to recharge the groundwater. Much thanks to Stillwater Science and Joel Monschke for the design and implementation of our bioswale!

“Bring Your Own” Bill

Here at the Gyppo Ale Mill we are always looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint.  Recently the State of California made it easier for us to do just that.  On July 12, 2019,  Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill making it easier for diners to bring their own reusable cups and containers to restaurants to help avoid single-use packaging.

What that means for you? The same way you have gotten into the habit of bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, you can now get into the habit of bringing your to-go containers to Gyppo and any other restaurant that chooses to participate.  We just love that saying “Teamwork makes the dream work!” especially when it comes to saving this precious place we call Planet Earth!
