Grey Whale Migration
March through April on California Lost Coast is one of the best places to watch the migration of pods of grey whales. Want to know why? It’s because of the Delgada Submarine Canyon located just off the shores of Shelter Cove. This canyon is over 600 feet deep within less than a half-mile off the coast then drops rapidly to a depth of 3,000 feet deep 14 miles off the coast. It is not only one of the largest geological features off the shores of North America but is also quite common for a whale to swim this trench and get incredibly close to shore. Who needs a boat to see whales when you can just make eye contact with these majestic creatures while picnicking at Black Sands Beach.
And did you know that the Gyppo Ale Beer garden is another amazing spot to do some whale watching? With ocean’s views to the north and the south, enjoy watching these 60,000-pound mammals lift over 90% of their body out of the water to create the world’s best splash. Give them a cheer over a beer and thank them for one of nature’s best shows!
