The Roller Coaster of Life
My hope and dreams go UP, and then my hopes and dreams go DOWN. Opening a brewery in Redway has become an emotional roller coaster. As a teenage I would make laps on Santa Cruz’s Giant Dipper. I went back a few years ago to ride it again. And guess what? It made me nauseous. As I get older riding roller coasters, be it real or figurative, just isn’t what it used to be.
(Are you so tired of hearing about our wastewater and water woos? If you aren’t I am! But here we go again.)
We were thrilled with the response from the Garberville Sanitary District (GSD) to agree to take our brewery wastewater. The turn out at the meeting melted our hearts. We had friends and family show up but we also had a few people speak up that we do not personally know. It meant a lot to us. Thanks You!
We optimistically took the GSD/Gyppo contract and a new service application to the Redway Community Service District. This is where my emotions start the slow slide downhill. First, some members of the RCSD board believe that Gyppo should fill out two applications. One for the restaurant, and a second for the brewery. Further, the restaurant may possible have the honor of being the first restaurant in Redway to fill out an Industrial Wastewater Permit. Even though, like all restaurant, Gyppo will have a grease trap, this appears to be a concern. Then, if I wasn’t slipping into a depression before, Josh’s father was able to go by and obtain the agenda for tomorrow’s RCSD Special Business meeting. Not only is Gyppo’s “New Service Application” not listed on the agenda but when you scroll down to number six, we found “New Connection Moratorium”.
A Building Moratorium. Dang! After all the hard work from both GSD and Gyppo to get to where we are. I am confused and frustrating. In September when Water Works Engineers presented the Capacity Study, this question was specifically asked and answered. The answer was “No”. So, why now?
The next board meeting will be tomorrow, Wednesday 25th at 6:30PM. This meeting takes place at 1150 Evergreen Road up at the RCSD office in The Meadows Business Park. If you are a business owner in SoHum, how will this Building Moratorium affect you? If you own property in Redway, what are the ramifications to your property value? If you are a beer lover, the consequences might just be disastrous. If you know someone who fits any of the above categories or you think would be interested in attending. Please pass this information along to them. My goal in encouraging people to attend this meeting is for the community to be a part of this process. Learn more about the capacity issues and what working together can do to create solutions.
I get excited as see different organization being formed and that have been around SoHum to help take responsibility for the direction we want our community to go. Eel River Clean Up Party, SoHum Community Building Forum, Mateel Restoration Council, Garberville Town Square. Maybe I am missing the big picture here and am dense. Is new business and economical growth not something that should be included in the direction of our community?
