Why Shelter Cove? Isn’t that a little out of the way? Absolutely Not.

If you are asking that question my friend, you need to take a long over due trip out to this gem of a town. Our community is absolutely bubbling over with life. It used to be predominately retirees, a core group of founding families, and a sprinkling of nature lovers, those folks that want to hike, bike and surf. A peek at our gorgeous beaches today, reveals an array of folks from all walks of life alongside of our long time inhabitants. It is because of this mix of individuals that we happily call Shelter Cove our home and are thrilled to bring our project, the Gyppo Ale Mill, to life there.
You might be thinking to yourself, that is great, new families, new faces but, is that enough to hedge your bets on the success of business in an isolated center; just a stone’s throw away from the Gyppo Ale Mill and is working on becoming the first community that will be completely powered by a solar micro grid system. The Humboldt Harbor district has recently taken over the job of running the Shelter Cove boat launch and is working on plans for demolishing and rebuilding the burned down building at that site. There is the possibility of turning it into a bait and ice shop for fisherman, as well as a retail fish location for tourists and locals alike.
Two. Family Values.

Shelter Cove doesn’t need another drinking establishment. I couldn’t agree more heartily. It has been years since I have stepped into what I define as a drinking establishment, a place where one goes that solely serves alcohol and that my small child is forbidden from entering. Although she is a handful, I sure do love seeing that smiling face sitting across from me at dinner and couldn’t imagine creating a place where she couldn’t come.
Rumors can make their way around our small community and if that has you convinced that a drinking establishment is what is opening, rest assured we are as far away from that as possible. Gyppo Ale Mill will be a family friendly restaurant that also proudly produces the highest quality beer that a brewery can put out there. Our building plans include a full sized commercial kitchen and we already have a delicious menu worked out that has a little something for everyone. I do not want to give anything away but I am guessing that from vegetarian to carnivore to gluten free to gluten loving, you will find something to LOVE on our menu.
Our dining room will have a view of the brewery and we strive to keep the atmosphere casual. We want everyone to be comfortable when they come visit us. There will be indoor and outdoor seating areas. Many of the breweries that we visited in doing our research for this project inspired us with their corn hole games, bocce and volleyball courts and often a cozy warm fire pit to gather around. We have a chunk of property not being used for the building and parking and we hope to implement some of what we have seen including a safe area for kiddos to stretch those bouncing legs and adults to enjoy a beautiful view and possibly get into the spirit of a child with some good ol’ fashion lawn sports in the company of friends, family and fellow community members.
Three. Community
We love our Southern Humboldt community; and are involved with a few non-profit organizations and love to help them put on different events to raise funds. Heart of the Redwoods Community Hospice is close to our hearts and we love participating in the Spring Gala, Barbeque and Brew and of course Taste of the Cove. We have done a few beer-pairing dinners to help raise funds for our daughters school, Beginnings. These were well attended and raised a good chunk of change to expand the facility for the preschool. The Southern Humboldt Community Park finds our entire core group of friends and family working behind the bar at the Fall Splendor. And closest to home, for the first time this year, we worked with Shelter Cove Arts and Recreation Foundation by pouring beer and wine at Plein Air, which was a wonderful experience with so many new faces we now call our friends.
It is always a joy doing these events but with that said; as we open this new business, don’t expect any changes in this area of our life. We don’t plan to lessen our involvement with the community but our involvement will most definitely change. The craft beer industry has a reputation for their dedication to community and we plan to follow in those footsteps. If you are a non-profit organization, hit us up!
